Oliver “Olly” Oolders is a Cook Islands/New Zealand navigator and carver whose work reflects a deep connection to culture, ancestry, and the ocean.

Oliver Oolders

Trained initially by Mike Tavioni and refined with guidance from Henry Tavioni, Olly approaches carving with patience, intention, care and respect.

A barefoot, calm, and collected soul, Olly is deeply connected to the sea and is on the path to becoming a captain of a traditional vaka. His experience in traditional voyaging spans much of the Pa Enua, and in 2024 he sailed from Rarotonga to Oahu, Hawaii, for the Pacific Arts Festival aboard Paikea under the guidance of master navigator Peia Patai.

Olly’s craft is anchored in research, cultural accuracy and a profound respect for natural resources. Each carving - from paddles to kumete (bowls) and Tangaroa figures - is deliberate, authentic and informed by an understanding of akairo (motifs) and papa’anga (genealogy). He carefully selects and prepares his wood, ensuring every piece is appropriate for its purpose and lineage.

At this stage of his journey, Olly prefers to explore traditional forms, balancing creativity with cultural fidelity. His work is precise, considered and full of promise. With his dedication, knowledge and grounded presence, he is widely recognised as a bright future leader in Cook Islands arts and traditional navigation.
