Te Au Kapeutara o Auau brings together traditional craftsmanship and cultural knowledge, creating work grounded in the stories, history and natural landscape of Mangaia.
Te Au Kapeutara o Auau
Te Au Kapeutara o Auau is a community arts collective based on the island of Mangaia in the Cook Islands. One of the oldest islands in the Pacific, Mangaia was formed approximately 19.5 million years ago. Its ancient volcanic origins and raised makatea (fossilised coral limestone) have shaped an island of caves, forests, fertile valleys and a landscape rich in history, stories and cultural knowledge.
Home to the villages of Oneroa, Tamarua and Ivirua, Mangaia is known for its skilled craftsmanship, especially its exceptional stone work and toki (traditional adzes). Many historic Mangaian toki are now held in museums and private collections around the world, recognised for their unique design, craftsmanship and cultural importance.
Te Au Kapeutara o Auau has a mission to preserve, revive and share the traditional arts and cultural knowledge of Mangaia while supporting both experienced and emerging artists. Members of their collective create authentic handcrafted works including; wood carvings, stone carvings, weaving, painting and other traditional art forms inspired by the history, stories and natural beauty of Mangaia. Every piece reflects a commitment to quality craftsmanship, cultural integrity and the passing of knowledge to future generations.
Through exhibitions, workshops and community projects, Te Au Kapeutara o Auau strives to keep Mangaia's artistic traditions alive while creating opportunities for local artists to share their work with the world. The collective provides a space for artists to connect, learn from one another and continue the skills, stories and knowledge that have been carried by generations before them.
